Cai Cai Vilu and Ten Ten Vilu
The Serpent Gods
Cai Cai Vilú is the God of Sea and of all that inhabits it and is who rules the seas; according to the Mapuche myths. This serpent god is a central figure in the origin of the Chilote Archipelago.
According to the myth, she is the son of Peripillán, a powerful god from the Mapuche ancient culture.
Ten Ten Vilú is the god of Land and Fertility, she has a generous spirit and is the protector of all life on earth, including plants and animals. She is the opposite of Cai Cai.
Ten Ten Vilú is the daughter of Antü another powerful and ancient Pillán.
*Depending on some Mapuche traditions, each serpent could be male or female.
The Legend
At the beginning of time, thousands of years ago, what is now know as the Chiloé Province was once one contiguous landmass with continental Chile.
One day a giant serpent appeared from the sea and inundated the lowlands, valleys, and mountains, submerging everything under the wild waters. Without delay, another giant serpent appeared and started a long and titanic confrontation between them. One creature make the water level goes higher and wilder, while the other elevates the land, protecting it from the disaster. The battle persisted for a long time until one of them prevailed. Fortunately for human kind the winner of this confrontation was the Lord of the Land.
On later tales, the Mapuche people knew that the serpent from the land was no other than Ten Ten Vilu, Land Goddess and her evil opposite was Cai Cai Vilu the Sea God. Ten Ten had sympathy for human kind and all earth creatures but she was exhausted after the battle with her twin brother so was unable to restore the land to it´s primeval state.
That´s how the continent was dismembered to it´s actual form and some tradition says that Cai Cai Vilu is buried under the Great Island of Chiloé gaining forces for his triumphant return.
Right now I'm gonna show you my drawing steps:
1, I just sketch on my sketch book to get some idea of the battle.
2, And I also make some quick drawings on my mac to try different light and shadow effects.
3, When I decide the composition, then I spent a little bit more time on the B&W version (I found some cool brushes!!). It is very important to do this because it can show the value and light effect. It also help me to paint the right color at the next step.
4, I put color and it seems good. TenTen is god of earth so I choose yellow and little bit green as its color and bule for CaiCai because it is the god of the sea.
5, I redesign the snakes to make them look more like snake (my girlfriend almost kill me when I search those snake pictures). Almost done.
7, After I finish it, I get rid of the color and see how's everything going then, it's not bad, and I think I can do better next time, I always believe this.
Thanks and enjoy!
Very nice work. I really appreciate this cause im chilean just like you (?)
